About Us
My name is Laura and I am the founder of Reading Nook Tutoring. I am a certified teacher with the Ontario College of Teachers and am a graduate of the Master of Arts in Child Study and Education program, OISE, University of Toronto. After gaining valuable experience in various classrooms, I've dedicated myself to helping students unlock their potential in literacy. Through my experience I recognized that traditional reading programs often fall short for struggling readers, leading to stagnation in their progress. Driven by this insight, I have dedicated myself to discovering innovative, research-based methods to enhance reading skills. According to this research, the most effective reading programs follow an explicit, systematic phonics approach which follows a specific scope and sequence to teaching children sound-spelling relationships. We have found that many children face challenges in hearing individual sounds within words and mapping letter sounds to their respective letters. This is why our program focuses on foundational word work activities designed to strengthen these essential skills, ensuring a solid base for reading success. The most effective programs also teach reading through pattern recognition rather than strict rules which reduces cognitive load. This approach allows learners to concentrate more on the essential goal of reading: comprehension. Join us in fostering a love of reading through engaging and effective learning experiences!

Here at Reading Nook Tutoring our vision is to establish a world where every child can read. Strong reading skills are essential for academic and later career success. Furthermore, reading opens up children to the world of imagination and knowledge and invites them to explore new ideas and perspectives. It can enrich their lives and provide inspiration with every page turned. We can ensure that every child has the opportunity to unlock the power of words.
Online Tutoring
Our program uses Zoom to design an individualized reading program for each student which includes word work activities, fluency instruction and guided reading. We chose to offer our services online because it offers flexibility, allowing students to learn in the comfort of their own home and at their own pace. It also provides access to a wide range of resources and materials that may not be available in traditional classrooms.
